Today I'm excited to share with you my review and blog tour for this amazing read. (see full blog tour links below) This was one of my favorite reads for January.
Review:
I admit that when this was presented as a “thriller” I had a different expectation of it than what I found it to be when I finished. I don’t know if I would personally classify it as a thriller per-se, but I did find it extremely gripping and page-turning.
Author Natalie C. Anderson takes us into Africa’s Eastern Congo, where much of the story is based on real events affecting people there. Human rights violations, especially those against women. While the story is fiction, it draws from persecution stories that the author heard first-hand while working with refugees in Kenya.
We follow Christina, ‘Tiny Girl’ on her quest for revenge. She knows who killed her mother and she’s spent the last five years patiently and carefully putting together a plan that will bring the killer to his complete ruin and then death. .
“Happy or sad isn’t the point. People don’t look for revenge to make them happy. They do it because they must. Do you understand?”
This book had several really powerful quotes, and this one about revenge really struck me.
What I really loved is that the author kept Christina in my sweet spot the entire time. Every time I thought she was going to fall into some old trope, she didn't and I loved it. After reading this I feel compelled to seek out the true #ownvoices stories of those who have suffered like Christina and the people in her life. I thought the author did an amazing job crafting a story like this from the stories she had been told.
I loved that I kept thinking I had the number on this story just to find out I was wrong. It kept surprising me. Even though the romance made me roll my eyes a little, it was VERY backseat to everything else, which scores big points from me. This book had great balance and I loved how it wrapped up.
